Your purchase is subject to state use tax unless it is specifically exempt from taxation. It can also be even more localized based on different cities within the same state. Sales tax is applied based on the shipping address, not the billing address.
If you or your organization are tax-exempt click here for more information.
Sales tax is charged to orders shipping to the following states:
AL, AK (certain localities only), AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KY, KS, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MS, NE, NC, ND, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY and Washington DC.
Alaska has no state sales tax, however some localities require us to collect sales tax.
Some of these states also require us to charge tax on services such as gift boxing and shipping fees in addition to the product tax.
Ex. In NYC, the City Sales Tax rate is 4.5%, NY State Sales and Use Tax is 4% and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge of 0.375% for a total Sales and Use Tax of 8.875%.
Please note that the purchase is not exempt merely because it is made over the Internet or by other remote means. Your state may require that you file a sales/use tax return at the end of the year to report and pay use tax on those purchases that are not specifically exempt from taxation where sales tax was not charged on the invoice. Please see the website of your state’s tax authority for tax return forms and further information.
